In a shocking revelation, composer of many Zelda projects, Ryo Nagamatsu, has left Nintendo for new horizons.
Nagamatsu’s departure comes after 17 years with Nintendo, where he worked on titles such as Tri Force Heroes, A Link Between Worlds, Link’s Awakening (2019), Mario Kart 8, and Splatoon 2 and 3. Leaving on good terms, Nagamatsu expressed on Twitter that he aims to “work a little wider and more directly” for those who need his help and to “help the industry.”
I have made a decision to leave the company of April 30, 2023. I will work a little wider and more directly to help those who need my help and to help the industry. Thank you all for your kind support! I look forward to serve you in the future!(an amicable settlement) pic.twitter.com/L5P7PgF7JG

Nagamtsu’s work appears far and wide across Nintendo’s library of games, a legacy that’s no small thing. One of his most popular pieces outside of Zelda which you may recognize is Mario Kart‘s “Coconut Mall,” which he composed alongside Asuka Ota. Here’s a list of the games and projects he’s worked on from the Nintendo Wiki.

John has been a Zelda fan for over 10 years now and is proud to say the series has had a major impact on his life (and wallet). After years of going to Zelda Dungeon for guides or the latest news on the series, John achieved their dream when they joined the writing team in 2019; John can hardly believe how long it’s been. A librarian, he loves meticulously arranging his library of Zelda games and collectibles. After what felt like an eternity of waiting for Tears of the Kingdom, John looks forward to the future of the Zelda franchise with enthusiasm, whether that’s the upcoming movie, a new spin-off/remake, or the next big game.
