As we have seen many times over, fans have found a lot of very different and creative ways to pay tribute to The Legend of Zelda and even ways to tell their own idea of a Zelda story. That is exactly what Stephan McGowan and Hunter Bonyun has done. Working together they posted the first page to their comic titled The Legend of Zelda: The Demon Road in mid December.

The Comic is a completely fan based non canonical story taking place outside of the Zelda world that we all know. I must say, from what I have read it is a very different approach to the Zelda series than we are used too, but it has a very good art style and a creative original story that I am sure many fans of the series would enjoy. One little thing some fans might find a bit irritating and while others find as a nice surprise is that our hero, Link, speaks in this comic! If that’s not enough to catch your attention than be sure to make the jump for an in depth summary of the story and where to read the first few pages for yourself.

The Demon Road is a Legend of Zelda fan-comic that does not take place within an established game world or time-line but rather it’s own, self-contained story featuring Link’s new adventures.

As a royal messenger in training, young Link finds a strange, unconscious boy in the middle of the desert. Unknown to him is that this child is the king of evil himself, Ganon, having been betrayed and cursed by a mysterious demon. Unable to simply abandon the strange child, Link and his master adopt him into their family to become a messenger in training along side link.

Unfortunately. Not all is smooth sailings, as Ganon grows up with and befriends the spritely Link and incorrigible Zelda during their adventures together; he slowly begins to re-gain the memories of his former life and his betrayal. When his demonic betrayer appears at the royal palace, Link and Ganon must save their friend and princess; but while Link and Ganon must work together to protect Zelda from the demon, as Ganon regains his former self, will Link be able to protect her from Ganon?

Above are the first 3 pages of the first chapter. To continue the story please visit the official site. So far they have only written 28 pages, so catching up to current pages won’t be too difficult or time consuming.

As I said earlier it is a very unique and different take on the Zelda series than we are used to seeing, but that is the great thing about fan comics and fan art in general. Whether it’s a picture, a written story, a web comic, etc… Each fans personality influences the final product in its own way, which is what gives us so much great fan based material. Personally, I love reading made up stories from other fans. Whether it’s a story connecting unexplained elements from different games or a brand new adventure for Link in general. I just love reading what others have to say about the series, unless I come across something so out of context it simply can’t be taken seriously.

With this web comic though, I feel that it’s creators did an excellent job. The art style, the writing, it all seems to be some of the more original fan publications I have seen. If you were like me and didn’t really find Navi annoying, you will clearly see they threw in the idea of an annoying fairy. I don’t consider it a rip off of OoT as much as I do a humorous aspect or “throwback” for the core fans to catch on and laugh at. I know I certainly will be following the story with each new page, but what about you guys? How do you feel about fan comics and this one in particular? Does the art style match with the story?
