In the middle of 2019, the world was a very different place. E3 had just wrapped up, and Zelda fans were picking up the pieces of their proverbially blown minds. The sequel to Breath of the Wild had just been announced with a teaser trailer that sparked hundreds, if not thousands, of theories about what was in store for Link and Zelda.

Fast-forward to this past week when both Geoff Keighley and Reggie Fils-Aime made waves via Twitter about speculations for the upcoming Game Awards. Keighley first teased a world-premiere of something at this year’s Game Awards (check out the original tweet here). It was only a day later when Reggie Fils-Aime was announced as a presenter, and he would go on to say the event would be “legendary” (his tweet can be found here). The exact wording of Keighley’s tweet referenced the 2.5-year gap, which has drawn many to speculate on what this big thing could be, and without any surprise, Zelda fans began murmuring. Fils-Aime added fuel to that fire with his choice of words also, especially considering his history of iconic Nintendo announcements. The Breath of the Wild sequel is certainly a possibility, as many of us hope but then again, considering we’ve seen two glimpses of this highly anticipated game, the term “world-premiere” might not be appropriate for the game.

Today’s Daily Debate then: Will we see the sequel to Breath of the Wild at the 2021 Game Awards on December 9th? Do you think Keighley’s and Fils-Aime’s comments solidify that belief? If not, what game could be being teased and what might Reggie Fils-Aime be presenting?

I’m hopeful that we’ll get to see it, but I also don’t want to get my hopes too high. The Game Awards are simply an awards show like so many others. Sure, the original Breath of the Wild had its big DLC revealed there. So did Joker in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. But there’s been plenty of dud moments too. With all that in mind, I’m hopeful that we’ll get something but still feel skeptical that it might just be a clever marketing ploy to draw in the thousands of Zelda fans who are clamoring for more news.
