As of the current state of the Zelda series, Hyrule is a land trapped in repetition. Villains such as Ganon or Vaati routinely return from beyond the grave and wreak havoc on the populace. The only bulwark against imminent destruction comes in the form of a singular chosen hero. This lone warrior must bear the burden of saving all that is good in the land from encroaching evil. That being said, it does seem rather odd that the people of Hyrule have been content to let a single hero solve their problems. Why does no one else step up and even try to defeat someone like Ganondorf? We know from The Wind Waker that it is possible for someone to obtain the right to the Master Sword and Triforce if they prove themselves worthy, but no one besides Link ever tried to do so.

It is true that past Zelda games have had some characters who act as if they are heroes. For example, there is Groose in Skyward Sword, Revali in Breath of the Wild, or Osfala from A Link Between Worlds. But the truth is, while each of these people talk a big game, they do little to help out in the fight against evil. My question for you today is: Would you like a rival hero or heroes to compete against in a future Zelda game? This person would be equal to the player in strength, and endearing to the populace. In a sense, Link would be put to the test to prove that he is the one truly worthy of confronting the legendary evil.

The rival could be a good or bad person. Not every ‘hero’ is inspired by noble goals. Think back to The Legend of Zelda TV series and its bafoonish Prince Facade. By all accounts, the prince is an experienced warrior and hero to his kingdom, but underneath the surface, he is not as fair as looks would tell. The true Facade (bad naming puns aside) buries his heroism in a well of vainglory and pride. On the other hand, a rival could be someone driven to protect the land for the sake of doing good, but still butts heads with Link over how to protect the land. I have the feeling that if Revali was alive during the events of Breath of the Wild, then the Rito archer would have been such a person.

But what do you think? Should Link be the only one saving the day? Or would you rather see someone else try and take the spotlight? Let us know in the comments below.
