Breath of the Wild Mod Aims to Make Princess Zelda a Playable Character
Posted on May 08 2018 by Rod Lloyd
Link isn’t the only chosen hero in Breath of the Wild anymore. Due in part to the amazing work done by the internet modding community, the latest Zelda adventure has seen a variety of fantastical and outlandish characters step into Link’s boots and assume the role of Hyrule’s Champion. Linkle from Hyrule Warriors, Carl Johnson from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Sherriff Woody from Toy Story are just a few faces added to Breath of the Wild through mods. But for all the amazing work modders have done to the game so far, an ambitious group is upping the ante by making Princess Zelda a playable character in Breath of the Wild, along with unique gear and new story moments.
The Zelda Conversion project will let players explore the world of Breath of the Wild as Princess Zelda. The effort began with modders WilianZilv and Skriller, who initially set out to simply create a Zelda character model that would fit over Link’s. Interestingly, as Princess Zelda only appears in the game in pre-rendered cutscenes, only an unfinished model of the character could be found in the game’s files. So, using this discovered model as a basis, the team built their own complete Zelda model for use in the project.
The work of WilianZilv and Skriller caught the attention of fellow modder Ainz, who proposed further ways to enhance the Zelda Conversion project. Ainz proposed changes to dialogue, music, and other in-game elements that would make Breath of the Wild more appropriate for Zelda as a protagonist. The team has since grown to over twenty people, as the project now aims to alter the original game by adding unique items, outfits, voice clips, and story content befitting its new hero. Artists and modelers have already completed Zelda’s new Gerudo armor set, Flambreaker set, and Fierce Deity outfit.
For all the progress made so far on the Zelda Conversion project, reports indicate that the team still has work to do to the complete the mod. There is currently no release date set, but the team plans to release the mod for the Wii U and CEMU emulator in the future, as well as find ways to bring it to the Switch.
