During the leaked trailer shown off for Hyrule Warriors 3DS today, GameXplain caught a hidden detail which could mean a few things. Keep in mind this is all speculation.

A member on Tumblr has recently gotten their hands on the Japanese Hyrule Warriors Stragety/Art Book and shared and interesting discovery, a page containing a scrapped female version of Link. While translations are still coming in we have found that her name appears to be something like “Linkle” while the other two boxes are concepts for Lana and Cia.
