~The Mermaid Keys~|
After completing Crown Dungeon, a Goron will appear telling you he dug a new tunnel.
Go right a screen and enter the second cave on the far right.
Go through the cave and head up the stairs. Push the top block to the right and push the one just under it down. Walk around and push the block on the far right down and the adjacent block to the left. Exit the cave.
Go right a screen, up a screen, and enter the cave found here.
Go down the steps, step on the switch, cross the bridge, and head left a screen. Exit the cave.
You'll likely run into Maple here. Afterwards, walk down two screens, right two screens, up a screen, and into the cave on the right side.
Walk up a screen and talk to the Blue Goron to play the Dance Hall Game. You have to mimic the moves of the Gorons by pressing A or B, depending on the notes that the Goron gives you. You have the match the dance moves identically and you cannot go too early or too late, otherwise you'll need to restart. You are given up to three mistakes. This can be one of the most frustrating games in the whole Zelda series, but after time and patience you'll get it. Once you finally complete the game by failing less than three times, you'll be rewarded with the Brother Emblem. Walk back down a screen and exit the cave.
Walk to the left a screen and slash the bush on the left to find a warp portal. Play the Tune of Echoes and return to the past.
Swim across the water to go right a screen and enter the cave.
Talk to the goron on the right side who is in front of the stairs and Link will show him the Brother Emblem, allowing Link to pass. Go up the steps.
Use roc's feather and Pegasus boots to jump cross the gaps and head left a screen. Climb up the steps at the end here.
Use the switch hook to get to the treasure chest and then exit the cave here.
Go down a screen and defeat all the enemies here. There is a plant seed that you want to put next to the wall. You cannot lift it up, otherwise it will break when you toss it. Instead, use the switch hook and push it to spot against the wall.
Play the Tune of Currents to return to the present and then climb the vines.
Go right a screen and enter the Target Carts mini-game.
Play the game and hit all the targets with the seed shooter. Your reward for getting a perfect 12 out of 12 will be a Rock Brisket. You can keep playing the game over and over, and one of the rewards will eventually be a boomerang. Exit the cave.
Go left a screen, down the vines, right a screen, and then jump off the ledge at the bottom here.
Enter the cave on the right and speak to the goron that's guarding the stairs. Show him the brother emblem and then talk to him again and give him the Rock Brisket. In return, the goron will give you the Goron Vase.
Leave the cave, head left a screen, and return to the past via the warp portal.
Go right a screen and enter the cave. Talk to the Goron who was blocking the staircase and give him the Goron Vase that we just got. In exchange, the Goron will give you the Goronade.
Leave the cave and play the Tune of Currents to return to the present.
Re-enter the cave and head down the staircase. Use the switch hook to make your way through this cave and head up the staircase at the end.
Go up the other set of stairs here and then head up a screen to find a goron. Talk to him and give him the Goronade, and in return he will open his game and give you a free shot. The goal of this game is to dodge as many bombs as you can. Use the Pegasus boots to quickly run away. As your reward for not getting hit, the Goron will give you the Old Mermaid Key.
Go back down the steps and exit the cave. Go down a screen and climb up the vines. Head right and play the Tune of Echoes and return to the past.
Enter the building to play the Goron Gallery. Score at least 100 points and you will be rewarded with the Lava Juice. Exit the gallery.
Go left a screen, jump off the ledge, head up a screen, and enter the cave.
Speak to the goron here and give him the Lava Juice and in exchange, he will give you the Letter of Introduction.
Go down the steps and make your way through this cave once again.
Once you reach the Dance hall, go up a screen and speak to the Red Goron who is running the dance hall. You'll have to play the dancing game a second time, but this time your reward will be the Mermaid Key. Exit the Dance hall and exit the cave.
Go left a screen and swim into the waterfall. Use the Old Mermaid Key to enter the first part of the next dungeon “Mermaid's Cave”.
~Mermaid's Cave (Past)~
Place a bomb against the cracked wall on the right and head through.
Defeat the wizrobes if you'd like to get a gasha seed and then continue right another room.
Use the seed shooter with some ember seeds to light the candlehead enemies found here. Be careful as they'll run madly once they are lit. Go up through the door that opens up.
Swim across the gap and lift the pots to grab some ember seeds. Then swim to the right a screen.
There are four torches here and you need to light them in order. Light the one at the top-left, then top-middle, then bottom-middle, and then top-right. This will cause the wall on the right to move significantly. This won't affect us for now, but we will be returning in the present much later on. You can swim to the left two screens to get the dungeon map if you'd like, but then backtrack and make your way back to the dungeon entrance.
Go up a screen and defeat the shrouded stalfos. You can head left a screen to get the compass if you'd like, but then continue north another screen.
Climb down the steps and then continue north another screen.
Defeat all the keese in this room and then light the candleheads on fire to cause the door on the right top open. Head right a screen.
Defeat the two shrouded stalfos in this room and open the treasure chest that appears to get a small key. Now backtrack left and down a screen.
Use the small key on the locked door and head left.
Defeat the blue wizrobe in this room and then walk to the left side of the room. Lift all the pots that are along the perimeter and then push the middle block onto the floor switch on the left. Run to the right side and use the cane of somaria on the floor tile on the right to cause the door in this room to open. Jump over the gaps and head up a screen.
Defeat the wallmasters and wizrobes and then bomb the blocks in the center of the room. Along the north wall, just to the right of the middle of the wall, place a bomb and the wall will crack open allowing you to pass northward.
However, there is no need to go up a screen just yet. This completes all that we can do in this dungeon during this time period. So backtrack all the way to the dungeon entrance and exit the Mermaid's Cave.
Play the Tune of Currents and then enter the cave here. Use the Mermaid's Key and enter Mermaid's Cave a second time, this time in the present.
~Mermaid's Cave (Present)~
Start the dungeon by heading up two screens, defeating the ropes and wizrobes that get in your way.
Walk down the steps, cross the water, and go up another screen.
There is a crystal switch in the middle of the room. Shoot it with the seed shooter and the floor in the room will change. Walk to the top-right part of the room and hit the switch a second time. Go right a screen.
There are three ropes on the inside of the blocks but you cannot reach them. Pull out the seed satchel and use a scent seed, at which the ropes will get attracted to it and fall of the cliff. Open the treasure chest that appears to get a small key and then head back left a screen.
Stand at the top-right of the screen and hit the crystal switch to cause the floor to alter. Run to the bottom-left of the room and hit the switch again. With the path changed again, head left a screen.
Place a bomb against the southern wall to crack a whole in the wall. Go down a room.
Use the switch hook to move the diamonds and place another bomb against the southern wall. Go down another room.
Jump over to the block in the room and push it DOWN once, and LEFT twice so it lands on the red square with the color red. Then push it RIGHT twice, UP once, LEFT once, DOWN once, RIGHT once, UP once, RIGHT once, DOWN once, and RIGHT once so it lands on Yellow with the color Yellow. Then push the block LEFT twice, UP once, RIGHT once, DOWN once, LEFT once, and UP three times so it lands on blue with the color blue. Open the treasure chest that appears to get a small key. Now backtrack by heading up two screens.
Jump over the gap and up through the whole in the wall. (Note: If you didn't place a bomb in this exact position while in the past, then this whole in the wall won't be here).
Walk through the two wheels and then head up a screen along the left side.
Walk left a screen, down a screen, jump off the ledge, and head back right a screen.
Go through the wheel a second time and then come back around once again and go through the wheel. This time it will allow you to pass to the left along the bottom portion of the room.
Walk around the room and head up a screen. Open the treasure chest here to get a small key and then jump off the ledge to the right.
Go down a screen, right a screen, back through the wheel again, and then head up a screen.
Jump off the ledge, and then head back down a screen. Go through the two wheels and you'll be taken back up a screen.
Jump off the ledge yet again, go down a screen, and take the wheel, this time taking you to the right side of the screen. Go up a screen.
Go right a screen and make your way around the room to get to the north side. Use a small key and head through the locked door to take on Vire, the dungeon mini-boss.
Vire will move in and out, tossing fireballs out at you from a distance. You can slash at his fire balls to prevent them from harming you. You must be patient and react quickly once vire comes charging in. Slash at him with your sword when he is close enough. The battle can go on for awhile as Vire is very hesitant to move in on you later in the battle. Just be patient and keep the strategy until Vire has been defeated. Once defeated, grab the fairy and head right a screen.
Lift up a bomb and toss them at the cracked block. Once you've broken the block, use the switch hook on the diamond in the middle of the room. Walk up and open the treasure chest to get the dungeon item, the mermaid suite. Use the switch hook on the diamond again and head back left a screen.
Step into the warp portal and get warped back to the entrance of the dungeon.
Go up a screen and right a screen. Avoid the enemies and swim to the right three screens.
Since we moved the wall in the past, we can now access the stairs here, so head down them.
Go through the side-scrolling section, using Roc's feather to jump over the gaps. Go up the staircase at the end of the path.
Take the upper path and use a small key to unlock the block. Go left a screen.
Go up a screen and you'll see two levers. Use the power bracelet and pull the one of the levers. Either a treasure chest will appear or ropes will fall from the ceiling. It can be quite random, so just keep defeating the enemies and pulling levers until the treasure cheat appears. Open it to get the boss key.
With the boss key in hand, there is nothing of importance left in this dungeon. Backtrack all the way to the entrance of the dungeon and exit the dungeon.
You can swim underneath the water at the top-left of the screen to find a treasure chest containing a ring.
Leave the cave, return to the past, and enter Mermaid's Cave one last time.
~Mermaid's Cave (Past)~
Walk to the right two screens and defeat the candleheads again to open the door. Go up a screen.
Go to the right a screen and use the Mermaid's Suite to dive under the deep area of the water.
Swim to the left a screen and then back right along the bottom of the screen. Defeat the bari and beri by using the switch hook and then go down the steps.
Swim through this side scrolling area and head up at the end of the path.
Swim across the whirlwinds, go left a screen, and then up a screen.
Defeat the ropes in this room and open the treasure chest to get a small key.
Backtrack down a screen, right a screen, down the steps, and through the side scrolling scene.
Swims back left a screen, then right along the top part of the screen, and finally, resurface at the top-right of the room.
Backtrack several screens to get back to the dungeon entrance.
Go up two screens, left a screen, and repeat the puzzle in this room to get a pot and the block from the cane of somaria on the two switches. Go up a screen.
Get rid of the pesky wall masters, blow up the blocks in the middle of the room, and then head up a screen.
Step into the wheel, walk around the room and step in again, and then walk around and step in again to get to the right side of the room. Walk around the room to the bottom-left and dive underwater.
Swim up a screen and then right a screen.
Defeat the ropes and then head up a screen.
Defeat the ropes once again and then head right a screen.
There are six diamonds in this room. Use the switch hook several times to get them on the six squares at the top of the room. A treasure chest will appear, so open it to get a small key.
Backtrack several screens and get through this underwater area.
Use one of the two small keys you have and head left a screen.
Use the second small key on the block in this room. Step on the switch once and then place a block using the cane of somaria so that the two panels are going from bottom-left to top-right. Bank a shot with the see shooter to hit the switch to cause a bridge to appear. Cross the bridge and head through the locked door to take on the dungeon boss, Octogon.
Octogon's weakness is his face. Sometimes it will appear above water, and sometimes it dive underwater. You need to follow wherever his face his and use the seed shooter along with scent seeds to defeat him. When underwater, Octogon will try and run after you. Just use the seed shooter and bank seeds off the wall so they come back and smack Octogon. When above water, push the puts out of the way to get scent seeds and then try to hit Octogon when he turns around. Just repeat this process over and over until Octogon has been defeated.
Grab the heart container that is left in the middle of the room and then head right a screen.
Get the Bereft Peak, 6th essence of time.
The Maku Tree tells you your next destination is Queen Ambi's palace. We'll tackle that section in the next chapter.
