Today, Zelda Universe descended into one of the saddest times in Zelda fanhood as they continued their 25 Years in 25 Days series. With amazing titles like A Link to the Past and Link’s Awakening now behind them, Zelda fans were left with a sad period of time without seeing much from their beloved series.

Nineteen ninety-four, at least for gamers outside of Japan, was the beginning of what would be the longest drought of Zelda games so far in the history of the entire franchise. Even worse is the fact that, unlike the three-and-a-half-year gap between The Adventure of Link and its SNES successor A Link to the Past, the five-year drought of Zelda games had none of the comics, cartoons, or other non-game media to tide us over in the interim… again, provided that you didn’t live in Japan. For US gamers, it was a long, drawn-out wait as we clutched each successive copy of Nintendo Power (or whatever the international equivalent was) and yearningly waited for the next piece of Zelda footage to be released.

After suffering through the Phillips CD-i games Link: Faces of Evil and Zelda: Wand of Gamelon, some gamers feared the Zelda series would never be the same. This year, their fears were likely tempered as the third and final CD-i game, Zelda’s Adventure, hit stores. Luckily, I was still only a toddler at this time and was not old enough to understand or witness what was happening with what would become my favorite series ever. However, my oldest brother and sister both experienced this drought and can still recall what it was like. The years before Ocarina of Time would be hard indeed; be sure to check out Zelda Universe’s summary of what little bits of Zelda we could get in those years.

How many of you remember the time before Ocarina of Time? Did you think Zelda was doomed to cheap knock-offs, or did you feel Nintendo would remain true and bring the series back to its glory days? Be sure to comment with your thoughts, and check back tomorrow for 1995!
