In their vigilant quest to regale us with the history of Zelda year by year, day by day, Zelda Universe brings us 1993! A special year in my heart because it gave us my very first Zelda Game, Link’s Awakening! On the other hand it also brought the CD-i games Link: The Faces of Evil and Zelda: The Wand of Gamelon.

If there’s a single year that should have been the best year for The Legend of Zelda out of all 25 of them so far, it should have been 1993. After having received the joy of A Link to the Past and after several years of Zelda cartoons and comics, the last thing that anyone might have guessed would be around the corner would be a year where we would see three brand new, memorable Zelda titles. Three Zelda games within but a few months of one another should have been a dream come true for any Zelda fan; even today, during the 25th year of the series, the fact that all of the old games are coming out of the woodwork in celebration is incredible, but only one of those games is truly a fresh, new experience, and that one by itself is making our mouths water. Three games would have been the most amazing thing ever.

I have not personally played The CD-i games but I did experience The Wand of Gamelon through Mases’ video walkthrough. The game I have plenty experience with from 1993 is Link’s Awakening. As I mentioned above, it was my first Zelda game and I actually had to share it with my twin brother. He got the first crack at the game and couldn’t figure out how to get past the raccoon so he never went back to that screen thinking it would always be a trap. Then literally for weeks he just farmed for rupees and purchased everything he could from the Mabe Village store! Eventually he got bored of that and decided to try and figure out the raccoon again and the adventure was off, with the added benefit of him having the bow prior to the first dungeon! Well after what seemed like ages of me trying to watch the tiny black and green screen over his shoulder, it was my turn to play this interesting adventure title, with the added benefit of my brother as a live players guide. Link’s Awakening is still up there among my top 5 Zelda games, fighting for supremacy against Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask.

The Zelda Universe article really does Link’s Awakening justice detailing that wonderful hand-held adventure. The article also shares a kinder opinion about the CD-i titles which is refreshing due to the amount of abuse they get. You owe it to yourself to walk down memory lane with Link’s Awakening or learn something new if you’ve never played it. So what are you doing still reading my post on their article? Make some comments below and then hop over to Zelda Universe to experience 1993 all over again (or for the first time). And don’t forget to tune in tomorrow for the wonder that is 1994!
