Since its inception, The Legend of Zelda has been among the most influential series in gaming. Many games have attempted to mimic the style and structure of classic Zelda titles, particularly during the indie game development explosion of the past decade. Many fans appreciate seeing familiar tropes and trends in Zelda-inspired independent works, and we’ll soon be getting another to sink our teeth into: Elementallis.

Described by creator Iván Ruiz Lozano as “a 2D top-down adventure mimicking the style and feel of classic 2D Zelda games”, Elementallis has all the trappings of a tremendous Zelda-like experience. The Kickstarter page promises a vast world to explore and 8 dungeons containing puzzles, enemies, and bosses. Watching the associated trailer showcases the beautiful sprite work and nostalgic music common to SNES-era adventure games. Elementallis’ unique hook is the utilization of elemental powers for combat and exploration. A radial menu can be used to select elements, which can be used to attack vulnerable enemies or interact with the environment.

Independent titles like Elementallis are a great way for Zelda fans to enjoy the classic gameplay they love in new settings created by up-and-coming developers. With major developers focused on creating bigger experiences, indies have stepped in to deliver the kind of tightly focused experiences that are becoming more rare. These more modest games can even inspire newer Zelda fans to try out some of the classic titles that have become neglected with age. If nothing else, Elementallis is sure to scratch your Zelda itch during the void between official Nintendo releases.

Elementallis is being developed by Iván Ruiz Lozano, an independent game developer from Bacelona, Spain. The game’s Kickstarter has since shattered its initial goal and has also surpassed all stretch goal thresholds; but if you feel compelled to support such an interesting project, you can do so here. You can learn more about Elementallis on the official website, Twitter, Reddit, and YouTubeElementallis  is slated for a June 2022 release on Nintendo Switch, Steam (Windows), Playstation 4/5, Xbox, and itch.io.
