The Legend of Zelda has managed to creep its way into the world of virtual gaming, starting with the Oculus Rift. To me, this is possibly the most exciting implementation of a Zelda game thus far because it really opens doors for the franchise as a whole.

In the video, you can see that the game is being played in first person, which really gives a different meaning to Link representing the player. Not only that, but it actually feels like the player is slashing up the enemies instead of commanding Link to do that work for them. In some ways, it even feels like a Minecraft game that has been reskinned with our silent hero in mind. Think of it this way: both The Legend of Zelda on the Oculus Rift and Minecraft itself are in first person with 8-bit graphics and monsters. Of course, the monsters in The Legend of Zelda are more one-dimensional and there’s an absence of blocks to build with, but you understand what I mean.

Another interesting point is the level itself. With the Oculus Rift, the world feels as though it’s one continuous world, unlike the actual game, which scrolls from screen to screen, and the structures in the game have some height to them. These features really give games like The Legend of Zelda or even A Link to the Past a new perspective with regard to the use of a different plane with the same 8-bit graphics, resulting in a great looking and absolutely playable creation.
