I’m not usually one for phrases and sayings but one I tend to agree with is that if something is worth doing it’s worth doing well. There have been plenty of cosply articles here over the years which have included some very good costumes. As much as I’d love to make costumes of several characters from the Zelda series I don’t have the skills to make it look decent. Imgur user hylianjean has spent the past 3 years making a…

Check out this awesome theory from Zelda Youtuber GameOverJesse, exploring the possibilities of Volvagia’s origin! Delving into the flaming Dragon’s lore as explained in Ocarina of Time, and from there attempting to trace back it’s fiery history! Make the jump to check out the theory.

When it comes to stories set in a medieval or pseudo-medieval setting, soon or later you’ll run into dragons. Either in the flesh or just referenced, there is something primordial, something alluring to large serpentine monsters. Many cultures who have had contact of some kind with scaled creatures from snakes to crocodiles have eventually developed a large and mighty variant of it: from the Chinese Dong Fang Qing Long (The Azure Dragon of the East), the Iranian Zahhak (known as…

Hello and welcome to The Back Cover, a new series I’ll be writing comparing and contrasting characters and aspects of the Legend of Zelda video game series, to that of their manga counterpart. For those of you who don’t know, there are ten manga books for the Zelda franchise, written by Akira Himekawa, covering eight of the main series titles. Reading about Link solve endless puzzles in various dungeons probably wouldn’t sell well, so the stories told in the manga series tend to…

For many gamers, the most memorable games are those that make impressions on us, show us new things, or give us some food for thought. Large games incorporate philosophy to build up the moral environment and bring life and character to NPCs, creating contrast between you and the various locations you are allowed to visit. Though simple in comparison to multi-player online games, the Zelda franchise excels at providing differing “communal” personalities, where each race has their own universal values…

This one was inevitable; I mean, what are dragons if not the single most well-known and popular mythical creature around? They show up all the time in modern fantasy stories and ancient myths alike, appearing in the beliefs and myths of many cultures worldwide. It seems everyone’s into large winged lizards with a little feline grace. Zelda, too, has an abundance of dragons, and more importantly their presence is rather obvious and not obscured like a lot of mythological elements…

Here it is, my final analysis of Ocarina of Time characters before I move on to characters from Majora’s Mask. A small compilation of some of the more significant side-characters, each individual analysis will look at a single aspect of each character/s, and explore the possible causes for each aspect. So without further ado, let’s get straight into it!

In a series like Zelda, with so many foes of every variety — villains, bosses, and regular enemies — it’s no surprise that not all of them are that well fleshed-out. The vast majority of bosses are never elaborated upon, though even as early as A Link to the Past you had a boss with an actual backstory in Blind. The villains, while they often have plenty of story details to their name, can also tend to be very simplistic…
