Those of you who have scoured the Skyward Sword game play and trailers may have wondered, as I have, who the man in the image to the left is.  Could he be Rauru the sage of light from the Ocarina of Time?  The folks from Nintendo last week confirmed that the events of Skyward Sword will lead into Ocarina of Time in some way.  They also confirmed that Skyward Sword’s story revolves around the creation of the Master Sword.

When you first meet Rauru in Ocarina of Time he says, “I am Rauru, one of the ancient Sages…  Ages ago, we ancient Sages built the Temple of Time to protect the entrance to the Sacred Realm…”

Notice Rauru says, “we ancient Sages…” This implies that he personally was one of the sages who built the Temple of Time, in which the Master Sword resides. Of course it could be argued that when Rauru refers to “we… sages” he could just be talking about the sages in general and not necessarily himself. I think the theory that the Old Man could be Rauru is the general consensus among Zelda fans, but I have another idea of who the “old man” could be.

I actually wondered if that Old Man in Skyward Sword is perhaps Zelda’s father.  Either the current King or ruler of Skyloft, or the man who by the end of the game could become the King of Hyrule.  I’ve added the image of King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule from Wind Waker next to Rauru and the Old Man so we can take a look and analyze their features.

Obviously King Daphnes Nohansen Hyrule would not be the same man as the Old Man from Skyward Sword, but he could be a descendant.  I think the events of Wind Waker make it clear that King Daphnes is supposed to be the unseen king from Ocarina of Time.

Ignoring the obvious different art styles, take a look at the facial features of the Old Man and King Daphnes.

The mustache and beard look like King Daphnes could be a graduation or evolution from the look of the Old Man. The eyebrows scoop down, and the noses both look similar (again taking into account the art style differences) both noses are a bit wider. The eyebrows also seem to echo one another, with the outward points of King Daphnes crown following a similar line into his own eyebrows as the Old Man’s eyebrows scoop up in a crown like shape.

What do you think? Do you think I’m onto something or just on something? Tell me in the comments below.
