Skyward Sword: An Awful Preview

Previews from E3 and a bunch of subsequent conventions have had almost nothing bad to say about Skyward Sword at all. They have praised the motion controls, the improved AI system, the unique items, and the combat system. Some previewers even said that the controls were so good that it would be hard to go back to previous styles of Zelda gameplay. Perhaps the term perfect would be bit excessive but it’s hard to think of another word to describe what we’ve heard about the game thus far.

The folks over at The Gamers Hub recently got their hands on the three-part demo and have a significantly different story to share with us. You won’t find the similar praise that you’ve almost unanimously seen in other previews. Instead, you find a person complaining about the unresponsiveness of the motion controls, sword slashes going in the wrong direction, flight mechanics that make it hard to judge distance, unnecessary game menu changes, and of course, how poorly the game looks in standard definition with a blurry, hazy and dull world.

While I was reading this preview, I got the sense that the previewer was more interested in trying to only point out the most miniscule of negatives that he can find, as opposed to talking about any of the positives at all. Of the five paragraph preview, four and half of those are spent bashing the game for pretty much any reason you can think of. On the flip side, he spends all of two sentences at the end of the preview to praise the game for its storyline outlooks and the massive scale of the game. I cannot pinpoint the reasoning for wanting to post almost entirely about the negatives of such an anticipated game.

My thoughts are that he might just truly not like the direction Nintendo is taking. Perhaps he hates the motion controls as it differs from standard gameplay and he’s allowing that negative impression to spread to almost everything in the game. Perhaps he just wanted to go against the grain and instead of saying exactly what other previewers have said… talk about more controversial topics since it will draw an audience. The old saying, controversy creates cash. In any case, this is the views of this one previewer while the overwhelming majority of all reviewers have had almost nothing bad to say about Skyward Sword at all.

Skyward Sword is set to release on November 18th in Europe and November 20th here in the United States. Be sure to stay tuned here at Zelda Dungeon for the latest news and media, as well as our full blown Skyward Sword Walkthrough, which we will make available shortly after the games release.
