Update: Bloomberg news is also reporting that, based on insider information, Nintendo plans to release an updated Switch model next year. While the exact specifications of the system have reportedly not yet been finalized, there is discussion to include “more computing power and 4K high-definition graphics.”
We’ll continue to update you on future developments.
Original: According to a report from Taiwan-based newspaper Economic Daily News, a new Nintendo Switch model will enter production later this year, with a planned launch in Q1 2021. Citing various manufacturers behind the Switch’s Flash storage and Joy-Con controllers, the newspaper claims that this new model will feature upgraded “interactivity” and improved display quality.
Nintendo released the Switch Lite in September 2019, but rumors of an improved “Switch Pro” model hitting the market have persisted since early last year. Most recently, Taiwanese website Digitimes, citing sources in the supply chain, reported in January that new Switch hardware would enter production in the first quarter of this year and release soon afterward. Nintendo addressed such speculation during an earnings presentation earlier this year, stating that there were “no plans” to release a new Switch model in 2020.
If the production of a new Switch model has been in Nintendo’s plans for 2021 or beyond, it’s unclear how much those plans were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Development and production of new hardware would have likely been stalled to some degree during the early phases of the pandemic.
As is the case with these types of reports, take the information with a grain of salt. Be sure to keep an eye on Zelda Dungeon for further updates.
