The Legend of Sanic: Ocarina of FastGiven the popularity of Ocarina of Time, and that it is widely regarded as one of the greatest games ever made, it is unsurprising to find that many people are interested in adding different modifications to this Zelda classic.  Some of these changes are programmed in order to enhance or stylize a particular game, and others are created for amusement.  One such humorous modification allows the player to control a familiar blue, cool, and fast hedgehog as the protagonist of Ocarina of Time instead of the series hero, Link.

It seems strange to think that one could play a Zelda game as any other character than Link himself, but it is now a reality.  This particular modification of Ocarina of Time by Flotonic allows one, as the player, to control Sonic the Hedgehog (“Sanic”) throughout the land of Hyrule in a quest to save Princess Zelda!  The interesting aspect of this change is that Sonic can run in Hyrule as fast as he can in his own games.  This speed has numerous comedic implications, including allowing the player able to skip certain barriers or areas!  Check out the video below for actual footage!

While playing as Sonic, it seems that one is able to escape the guards at Hyrule Castle and is also able to get past Mido to see the Great Deku Tree before obtaining the shield and sword in Kokiri Forest.  This adds considerable excitement to the game, since it challenges the player to uncover more interesting shortcuts through the story!  If you are interested in trying this modification out yourself, here is a link to the webpage on Maco, a community of Zelda “modding.”

I’m usually not one to modify different games, but I am incredibly tempted to do so in this particular instance; it’s quite comical to watch Sonic run through Hyrule with incredible speed!  What do you think?  Are you interested in trying this “mod” out for yourself?  Have you found any other modifications to Zelda games which allow one to play as another iconic character?  Let us know in the comments section below!
