One of the ongoing challenges Nintendo is currently facing is its entrance into the smartphone scene. While the company’s four smartphone titles have been more or less well received, it does seem like they’re still learning how the mobile game business works. Even the Nintendo president admits that they’re still working on their approach to this aspect of the industry.

The president of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawa, recently sat down with The Sankei News to talk about the Switch, as well as the company’s time in the smartphone business. After discussing unit sales for the Nintendo Switch, Furukawa is asked about how selling units for mobile games compares to their current console:

TSN: How about your games for smartphones?
Furukawa: Smartphone gaming for us is not a business where we sell our consumers a product once and that’s the majority of it. Our operational model is to continue to build a relationship with our consumers. It is very different from what we do with our dedicated gaming hardware, so we are in the midst of accumulating experiences in this field. We certainly want to release games across a wide variety of genres. We want this to continue to be one means of supporting our pillars of revenue.

It does seem that, while Nintendo is still learning the best approach to mobile gaming, they’re trying to adapt their own business philosophy in the process. Hopefully they can find the right niche while also not falling into the stereotypical mobile game trappings.
