When you fire up your Switch today, get ready to update the system. That’s right, Version 10.0.0 of the Switch firmware is here, with a huge quality of life improvement: welcome to the world of controller mapping!

Controller mapping allows users to swap button functions. Now players with accessibility challenges or different play styles can easily remap controllers to work for them. Players can remap both joy-cons, the Switch Lite, and the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. Other controllers aren’t compatible with the firmware at this time. The system will remember five controller profiles, so different players on the same console can use this function too!

Other updates to the firmware include the ability to move software data between the system system memory and an inserted SD card. Not all data can be moved, but most downloads and save data should be eligible. Data manipulation doesn’t sound exciting, but can be incredibly useful. Users can also bookmark their favorite news articles (ie: those Nintendo Power podcasts), and change their player icon to their favorite Animal Crossing character.

Want to know more? Feel free to read the patch notes here. Happy mapping, and don’t forget to save your game before updating!
