sq Tevis Thompson and artist David Hellman came together to create the graphic-novel “Second Quest” that is heavily based on The Legend of Zelda series, only its protagonist is a curious young girl who refuses to accept her world the way it is. “Second Quest” is a meditation on the culture of videogames, the importance of courage, and the beauty of adventure. The story went on sale on April 22nd, it can be bought as an e-book or hard copy. Twenty pages are available for free online and a poster is available for purchase as well. The novel was inspired by Thompson’s essay “Saving Zelda” which criticizes Skyward Sword’s linearity, so the novel focuses on exploration and discovery in more than just the literal sense. Aptly named “Second Quest” it is a rearrangement and alternate take on the Zelda formula; the heroine of the story, Azalea, also lives on a floating island which is reminiscent of Skyloft. The creators’ vision of the graphic-novel was described as such on the official website,

“They imagined a comic that would express some of their frustrations with videogames and the insular culture surrounding them but also resonate with similar dynamics in the wider world… a tale of enchanting surfaces and not-so-secret darkness, one that questions the common legends we tell about our kingdoms, our people, ourselves.”
