Nintendo just released a brand new firmware update for the 3DS that enabled the previously talked about themes feature for the system. This allows you to add a little personalization to your home screen, just like you can on your phone or pc. The update comes with 5 free themes and additional themes that can be purchased from the eShop for $1.99 for character themes and $0.99 for patterns. The A Link Between Worlds theme chimes in at the $1.99 mark and does more than just change the skin on your home screen. It adds sound clips and littler touches here and there, making your system truly feel like a Zelda gaming machine. I would assume this is true for all of the themes currently available.

There are 15 themes available to purchase, making the total count right now stand at 20. The image to the left is from neoGAF user axilofweevils. In addition to the themes, here is what the entire firmware update does:

  • Users can now use themes to customize the design and sounds of the HOME Menu
  • Five themes are pre-installed and additional themes can be purchased from the Theme Shop
  • Themes can be changed by using settings located within the HOME Menu settings
  • A feature has been added that allows users to capture screenshots of their HOME Menu
  • The Nintendo eShop Title Information page has been updated to provide easier access to any available videos, demos, user reviews, and other information
  • Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user experience
