According to a recent interview by GameReactor, Shigeru Miyamoto has all but stated that the Zelda franchise will not move outside Nintendo’s headquarters in Japan. Although many fans have expressed their desire for a Zelda game that more grasps the Western roots that the series was more or less born from, Miyamoto isn’t too keen on allowing Retro free reign with one of the largest series in gaming. He hasn’t completely closed the door on the possibility, however. Hit the jump for more!

Here is the full statement from Shigeru Miyamoto on the topic:

So far the design and script was created within Nintendo and this must continue. Though Retro is qualified, they would have to be very in touch [with us], and, being outside [Japan], communication is more complicated. Retro should focus on developments with less dependence; they’re probably not be the most appropriate [for Zelda].

Though I wouldn’t expect the iconic series to be developed by Retro Studios any time soon, its chance could come in the future. To me, it seems that Miyamoto is more afraid that Retro Studios will take the series to a direction that he personally doesn’t approve of. Though we have seen great success in other Retro Studios games, such as the Metroid Prime trilogy, the idea of letting Retro Studios handle as big of a game as Zelda is a gamble.

Don’t get me wrong, I have faith in Retro Studios to make a good game, perhaps even better than Miyamoto and friends could do at Nintendo, but I’m not sure Miyamoto wants to take that risk. However, Retro might be able to breathe new life into the series that has been sitting comfortably atop its name, and a revolutionary title might just re-inspire the fans.
