Super Smash Bros. series director Masahiro Sakurai took to the air waves this morning to announce that four characters from the ultra-popular survival game Minecraft will be the latest DLC fighters for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Protagonists Steve and Alex, alongside the Zombie and Enderman enemies, will take the second slot of Ultimate‘s Fighter Pass Vol. 2.

Sakurai ended the stream by explaining that these Minecraft characters were brought to Smash at the behest of Nintendo, as well as by explaining some of the difficulties in doing the Minecraft brand justice. Well, despite some the challenges he brought up, it seems Sakurai and his team did a great job capturing the spirit of Minecraft.

Today’s introduction video showed how Steve, Alex, Zombie, and Enderman can place Minecaft‘s iconic voxel blocks on the battlefield and take advantage of items like pickaxes, lava buckets, pistons, and red stone. We saw a glimpse of the new Minecraft stage, which seems to feature different configurations of blocks depending on the biome presented. All in all, I’m frankly astonished by how much Minecraft love the team was able to cram into the game.

Sakurai will present Minecraft‘s Steve and Alex in action on October 3rd at 7:30 PT / 10:30 ET.
