While the sky areas of Skyward Sword received a great deal of criticism, Skyloft is one of my favorite locations across the entire Zelda series. Link’s floating hometown is filled with energetic townsfolk and gorgeous scenic vistas. The town’s bright colors and homely feel make it an excellent hub for Link to return to over and over again throughout his journey. In addition to the beautiful visuals, the town has a gorgeous musical theme that deftly puts the player at ease as they explore the jolly town.

This short cover of “Skyloft” by Anjellystrings uses Kalimbas to create its soothing tone. The Kalimba, also known as the “thumb piano” in many areas, produces beautiful, clear sounds. On many Kalimbas, the lowest notes are located in the center and the notes get higher as you move towards the left and right edges. When playing the instrument, the player must pluck the tines with their hands. As you can see in the video, Anjellystrings layers the sound of two Kalimbas on top of each other to produce this cover.

Overall, this is an extremely peaceful cover, perfect for blowing off steam after a long day. While other covers may use more varied instrumentation, the beautiful tones of the Kalimba transform “Skyloft” into a lullaby. While the cover is only a minute long, it effectively creates a restful environment that will linger in the listener’s heart and mind.
