Link…Prince of Hyrule?

In Skyward Sword,
Zelda and Link are childhood friends that have more than one instance of
romance. There’s even a moment in the game where you actually think that Zelda
might give Link that kiss we are all hoping for. Link does everything he does
in this particular game because of his relationship with Zelda. But another
game that we all thought was essential in the argument for a romantic interest
between the two is Ocarina of Time. I
mean, Shigeru Miyamoto even revealed that our favorite Hero had a female
admirer in his fairy companion Navi, and that she was jealous of Princess
Zelda. However, there could be other information in this game that points not
at a romantic relationship, but instead a sibling relationship?
It seems like a far stretch, but there are some events and
lines in the game that could be indications of a blood relation. These rumors
began with A Link to the Past, when a
mistranslated line gave birth to this theory: “Save the Princess…Zelda is
your…” Your…? Your sister? Lover? What?
Along with this is the fact that Zelda and Link in Ocarina look
alike. They both are depicted as blondes with blue eyes and their faces and
head shapes are nearly identical. This could be due to the graphic limitations
of the time, although other versions of Link and Zelda kind of look similar. The most notable of these is that once Tetra
has transformed back into Zelda, she looks very similar to Aryll, who we know
is Link’s sister. Hmm. But physical appearances aren’t enough to suggest that
this is a possibility.
When you first encounter Princess Zelda in Ocarina and tell her
your name, she states that your name—regardless of what you named your
character, but just for consistency’s sake, we’ll say ‘Link’—sounds somehow
familiar to her. There are a number of reasons for this. She could be referring
to her prophetic abilities, or her spiritual connection to the Spirit of the
Hero, or could she have heard his name as a child, because they are siblings?
She suggests that she knows his name, but she isn’t quite sure if she actually has heard it. Couple this with the fact
that just moments later, Impa teaches you “Zelda’s Lullaby”, a song reserved only for members of the Royal
Family, and it’s possible that they could be siblings.
Do you remember the Royal Composer Bros. from Ocarina? They
revealed the way to the Sun’s Song, and served the Royal Family in life. They
were presumably killed by Ganondorf because they wouldn’t yield the Sun’s Song
to him. They, also, have the mark of the Royal Family on their clothes this
being the Triforce. When you talk to Sharp, the elder of the two brothers, he
remarks:
“GYAAAAH! I’m DEAD AGAIN! What?
You again? Somehow you remind me
of…Princess Zelda…Hmm…Since you may
have some connection with the Royal Family, I will tell you a little more
of our tale.”
Sharp, who worked for the Royal Family, and would know Zelda
and any family members of hers, tells you that you remind him of Zelda and that
you have a connection to the Royal Family. Your connection could simply be the
fact that you know Zelda’s Lullaby, but…why would Impa teach a strange boy who
she doesn’t know a melody that only the Royal Family knows? And since Impa,
more than likely, would have been at both Zelda’s and Link’s—if he is, indeed,
Zelda’s brother—births, then she would already know that he is the secret
prince.
The next point I will make is Link’s and Zelda’s parentage.
In Ocarina of Time, the only parent
of Zelda’s that is mentioned is her father, the King. There is no mention made
of the Queen, not even when Zelda is talking to Link about her father and
Ganondorf. And on the flip side, there is no mention of Link’s father, although
he is told explicitly by the Deku Tree Sprout that his mother escaped the war
ravaging Hyrule and left baby Link to the care of the Deku Tree and died not
long after. Assuming that there is a possibility that Link and Zelda could be
siblings, presumably the reason why the Queen is never mentioned is because she
is dead. And we already know that when Zelda escapes from the Castle with Impa
that the King is killed by Ganondorf. Is it possible that the Queen, who
possibly could have had prophetic abilities like Zelda’s, foresaw her
children’s destinies and was on her way to separate them when Ganondorf’s
forces attacked her and killed her?
It would be easier to obtain both pieces of the Triforce if
the two of them were together. And there is no mention of an explicitly
romantic relationship between Link and Zelda in this particular game. In fact,
if anything, they are more likely involved in a platonic relationship than a
romantic one. There is no indication that they would have gotten married and
had children in this game, and in the placement of the timeline, the split
bloodlines of Link (Knights Bloodline) and Zelda (Royal Bloodline) could easily
have occurred after these events.
And, Hyrule could be a place where gender doesn’t affect the
succession of the Royal Family. If Zelda were older than Link, then it makes
sense that even if Link were to discover that he was the Prince of Hyrule, why
he would rather allow Zelda to continue the Royal Family and rule Hyrule. After
all, the deities of Hyrule are all female.
And Zelda had the Triforce of Wisdom, therefore she would be the better option
for a ruler having intelligence and wisdom beyond her age. And if we know
anything about Link, he would be more willing to protect the realm than rule it
anyway.
So could this theory be possible? Could the developers of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
have left us hints as to a very Star Wars ending to the game? And I know a few
of you may question that if this were true, why was it never revealed in the
game? Why, to put it frankly, because it isn’t important to the plot. Link
would still rescue Zelda, regardless of whether or not she was his sister or
his lover.
So what do you all think?
