IGN’s Comic-Con Rewind Theater

IGN got their Rewind Theater up very quickly this time around, since there are only a few new things to talk about in this trailer. Audrey and Sam for the most part do a pretty good job of describing what you see in the trailer and displaying their Zelda knowledge. Of course, like anyone, there are some things that they missed, or decided not to talk about. You can find my thoughts on this feature as well as more things I noticed in the trailer that weren’t mentioned after the jump.

I think they do a great job describing the Skyloft scenes, with the new overhead view of the giant statue and Link and Zelda on the platform. While your attention is on them, I also noticed that the bird symbol makes a prominent appearance on the neck of the statue. It’s hard to see in IGN’s video, but you should be able to make it out in this screenshot. We’ve seen this symbol all over the place, including on Zelda’s dress and in the Sky Temple, and now we see it connected with the goddess statue. This could have something to do with why Link’s bird is special.

Bell TowerI especially liked Audrey’s reference to The Minish Cap with the celebration. Skyward Sword’s director, Hidemaro Fujibayashi, also directed The Minish Cap, so I think we can expect to see a lot of his ideas carry over. The flags used in the Minish Cap celebration were one of the few places the Triforce was displayed in that game, and in Skyward Sword the flags have the bird symbol on them. Another thing supporting this comparison is the bell that appears in one frame of this Skyward Sword trailer. The only other such bells in Zelda that come to mind are the one atop the Tower of the Gods in The Wind Waker, and the one in Hyrule Town in The Minish Cap. When asked whether Ghirahim is connected to Vaati, Aonuma suggested “Well, the director on the project this time around is Mr. Fujibayashi, who also worked on Minish Cap. Perhaps there’s something about Mr. Fujibayashi’s sensibilities in regards to design that might have influenced both characters.” I think his influence extends well beyond just one character.

After their excellent speculation about the small statue and the new tinkering character, I was amazed to see that they missed Link’s earring! In their E3 2011 Rewind Theater, Audrey made a pretty big deal out of Link’s earrings being red in one scene. This same scene was shown again in the Comic-Con trailer (at 0:25), but Link’s earrings are blue this time! So it seems they fixed one inconsistency, but there are still two more that were pointed out to me. First, the scene with Link and Zelda flying on their birds and Zelda being sucked into the tornado is the only scene in which Zelda isn’t wearing her white shawl, though she is wearing it in the very next scene when she’s caught by the whale. Second, Link is using the basic sword that he had at the beginning of the game in the last scene fighting Ghirahim. This doesn’t make any sense, since Link already has the Skyward Sword when he receives the green tunic. Neither of these was fixed in this trailer, so we’ll just have to wait and see if they’ll be fixed in the final game or if they have some other explanation.

Earring Comparison

Audrey and Sam have a nice discussion of the old man to expand on her and Rich’s somewhat lacking speculation in the last trailer. The two common theories about this guy involve Rauru and Kaepora Gaebora, and I’m more inclined to consider the former. As I wrote in my article about the E3 trailer, Rauru states that he’s an ancient sage who helped construct the Temple of Time, which I believe we will see in Skyward Sword. Kaepora Gaebora is merely rumored to be a reincarnation of some unspecified ancient sage. It is still quite possible that they will both appear in Skyward Sword.

The vines that Audrey says are new actually aren’t. She must not have gotten very far in the Sky Temple demo during the ten minute time limit (not many did), or forgot about this part, because this is actually in a large room at the end of Sky Temple, just before the boss room. You can see this section toward the end of this video, or other gameplay videos that reach near the end of the dungeon.

Finally, I think that their analysis of the Goron is spot-on. When I first saw it, I instantly thought of the travelling merchants in The Wind Waker. This character appears in the area with the first Siren World segment and Sky Temple, and I think he or other Gorons will appear throughout the game. That Triforce she noticed is the only one we’ve seen so far outside of the Siren World, so he may play an interesting role in the story this time around.
