Navi ListenDespite many companions, meetings and reunions portrayed in the Zelda series since Ocarina of Time, Nintendo has yet to fulfill the ardent desires of child Link as shown in Majora’s Mask. Will they ever give us a reunion between our hero and one of the most iconic sidekick characters in gaming history?

Many players found Navi to be annoying and her ever-ready flow of advice to be more of a hindrance than anything else. Her incessant need to inform the player about every new development and remind Link that he needs to go over to some other area immediately had a strong potential to become infuriating. But really, Navi falls lower on the hand-holding spectrum than many other Zelda companions. For example, Midna would simply refuse to allow Link to stray too far off the intended path, the Spirit of Courage, combined with your cowardly ship captain in Phantom Hourglass, practically lit up the right areas with a strobe light, and who could forget Zelda’s panicked and disembodied spirit in Spirit Tracks. At least you could ignore Navi after learning how to play the game.

Link_Navi_1When the timeline split at the end of Ocarina of Time, all scenarios end with Link losing Navi, but it is only within the child’s timeline that he searches for her. Perhaps the esteem and life that awaited adult Link were enough for him to simply hold her in his regard and move on while his child self became dejected in his knowledge that he saved Hyrule and no one else would ever know or believe that Hyrule had ever been in jeopardy. In the end, Navi was his only hope for a friend and he yearned for that relationship just like any of us who find ourselves friendless and alone.

Given that this is a fairly substantial relationship, it makes sense that Majora’s Mask was made and that Navi played a part in the premise of the game. But, if you recall, the game not only ends with Link not discovering where his old friend has gone, but with even the player forgetting that she was Link’s original mission. Wouldn’t it make sense to reunite our two heroes since Nintendo has already established that Link is forlorn without her? It wouldn’t have to be in the sense of a new game with her as the surprise companion, but at least coming across a fairy glade or something wherein he learns that she is a wise leader, a happy resident or a beloved ancestor.

If we can see even more fairies in alternate realms be the equivalent of deities, why can’t we honor Navi with a cameo somewhere in Link’s many adventures through space and time? Let us know if you think Link should have a happy reunion with his original companion in the comments!
