Gossip Stone: Should Nintendo prioritize mechanics or characterization?

There are several aspects that can make a game great. Two of the most important elements are the game’s mechanics and character development and the Legend of Zelda series has done a great job with the mechanics and it’s had some very notable characters. In the future should the Zelda games focus on the mechanics or the characters?

This is a pretty easy question in my opinion because I feel the Zelda series is popular almost completely due to how amazing the game mechanics are. From the controls and items to the dungeons and the boss fights, the Zelda games do a great job at keeping a gamer engaged by executing the necessary game mechanics incredibly well. If Nintendo were to deviate from the game mechanics and focus on the characters the mechanics could suffer as a result. Personally, I would love to see more character development, but it shouldn’t be the main focus. Instead it should just be something to try and improve on after the mechanics of the Zelda game are finished. If the mechanics suffer I fear the game will too because the Zelda series stands tall because the mechanics hold it up so high. What do you think? Let us know in the comments below.
