Hello Zelda Dungeoners, and welcome to the first edition of our new weekly music feature: Flute Boy’s Meadow!

To kick things off, this week we are looking at a rather famous ocarina player who most have probably come across from time to time: David “Docjazz” Ramos. Ramos has been playing the ocarina for well over a decade, putting his covers and original pieces on YouTube since 2006. He has mastered numerous ocarina varieties in that time and both his cover work and his original work are all top-notch. Jump in to see some of his work!

Many of you probably know David Ramos by his YouTube name, Docjazz4. If you have never heard of him before, however, you are in for a treat today!

While his primary instrument is the Ocarina, Ramos also plays the guitar, piano, cowbell, and other instruments in accompaniment with his flute. He was first introduced to ocarinas the same way many of us were: by playing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. As such, many of his covers tend to be Zelda related, and therein lies today’s focus.

Below is his cover of “Ballad of the Wind Fish” from Link’s Awakening, which is one of my absolute favorite covers by him. I feel this video is a great example of the sort of mood he manages to capture with his music be it original or Zelda-based. From the setting to the pseudo-orchestra in the background of the song, this is a gorgeous four minutes.

On a very different note, David also has some videos with a more cheerful tone. For example, his cover of Ocarina of Time‘s Shop Theme features multiple videos of himself on different instruments, each one with more or less interest in their playing. Some hilarity ensues when the cowbell guy gets bored…

I hope these two videos have given you a good idea of David’s talent. His Zelda covers are among my favorites on YouTube and all over the internet, but it doesn’t stop there! He also writes his own music, reviews popular Ocarina choices, and covers tunes from a variety of sources. You can find most of his stuff on his YouTube channel, and can also keep up with him on his website and Twitter and Facebook pages.

And that concludes our first edition of Flute Boy’s Meadow! You can look forward to this every week on Monday, where I’ll be giving you a look at more Zelda covers, cover artists, and original music. See you next week!
