One thing that’s always impressive about Zelda fan projects is their quality. Fans of the franchise seem dedicated to putting out projects that are up to even Nintendo’s standards of quality. This fan project quality is especially apparent in YouTube creator Thomandy Piano’s cover of “Rauru’s Farewell” from Tears of the Kingdom.

The fun part about this particular cover is that Thomandy Piano, aka Thomas, has added some live electronics to accompany himself (the original track from the game seems to feature just a piano, with a little bit of strings coming in to round out the tension of the scene). Thomas has added a delay effect to his piano, giving it an echo effect, and he’s added a string synthesizer which brings some additional texture to the piece. In addition to the absolutely beautiful audio, the video has some very effective shots of him playing, with a slow fade-in fade-out effect added.

The most impressive part about this cover, and the rest of Thomas’ channel, is that he seems to be transcribing these pieces by ear. There’s no sheet music in front of him, and for a lot of the pieces he plays, there aren’t many arrangements available for purchase. This is an incredibly difficult thing for any musician to do, and Thomas does it wonderfully. In addition to being a fantastic self-taught pianist, Thomas is also a fashion designer, with some pretty awesome hoodies that you can check out here.

If you enjoy this lovely arrangement, be sure to check out the rest of Thomas’ videos on his channel here. He’s posted a lot of great covers of pieces like “The Elegy of Emptiness” from Majora’s Mask, and “The Ballad of the Goddess” from Skyward Sword. He’s also got a few arrangements of popular Zelda tunes with his own spin on them, like this “cold” arrangement of “Kass’ Theme” from Breath of the Wild.

What do you think of this lovely cover? I love the way Thomas plays, but would love to hear what you think in the comments below!
