In the game, Twilight Princess, we see that a veil of darkness is swept among the kingdom of Hyrule. Any regular citizen, whether they are Hylian, Goron or Zora, are affected in a devastating way once they come in contact with the twilight. As we see in the game, these bystanders become spirits themselves once engulfed in the twilight cloud. However, unlike his friends and everyone else, Link himself does not become a clueless spirit, but instead transforms into a “blue-eyed beast”. Now, how exactly does Link become a wolf, instead of a spirit? YouTuber Dr. Wily breaks down the different possibilities that could explain why this only occurs with our hero.

After entering the twilight realm to save the Ordon kids, Link endures the (painful looking) transformation into a wolf, leading to his captivity in the castle. Dr. Wily then notes that Link’s Triforce mark glows in the cut scene much like other games, and that specific cut scene could indicate it’s the Triforce of Courage resonating in Link as he struggles for his life. Even when encountering the Hero’s Shade, we see him as a wolf before training with him.

Dr. Wily then says that the twilight could be trigger as to why Link transforms into a wolf, since we see Princess Zelda unaffected at all, as she has had to practice her powers all her life. But the princess also has her own transformation associated with her Triforce of Wisdom, that being Sheik and Ganondorf becoming Ganon with his Triforce of Power.

Since the dark realm’s evil magic could be a very strong trigger to Link’s transformation, it could also be why there are no other Links that have this transformation in their respective timelines. It could simply be a choice by the goddesses themselves that granted this particular Link the transformation power to protect him and once they sensed that it was time to act, Wolf Link came to be.
