DarkAkuma, of the Oculus Rift Forums, has recently recreated the entirety of Kokiri Forest from Ocarina of Time. It’s only a walk-around demo, with no NPCs, interactable objects, enemies, and little object collision, but it’s got a few animations and sound. It took a long time to make, as DarkAkuma had to manually recreate nearly everything in this small town. The entirety of the demo is seen from Young Link’s short perspective, which really serves to give a lot more sense of size and scope; for example, the Great Deku Tree looks absolutely enormous, and the virtual reality of the Oculus Rift really helps to showcase that more than the Nintendo 64 did back in 1998.

For those unaware, the Oculus Rift is a functioning virtual reality headset for 3D gaming, designed for immersive experiences we’ve been dreaming of since that 2001 episode of The Fairly OddParents, “Power Mad!” (wait, that was thirteen years ago?). Its forums have seen a big indie boom in the past few months, with various recreations of famous retro titles, as well as a lot of independent games that take full advantage of the high technological capabilities.

Full details of the demo, a tentative first effort by a dedicated fan, are found here, along with the download links. Hopefully, DarkAkuma will find it in himself to recreate more of the game!
