An interview with Aonuma during E3 revealed that Nintendo would consider giving Zelda a stronger role in a game, or even her own game if fans requested it enough. So, soon after that interview, a growing new Facebook page was created requesting that Zelda be a bigger part of future games. Maybe if it gets big enough Nintendo will actually start planning a game that features the series’ namesake! Hit the jump to read more about the interview and this Facebook page!

We covered the part of the recent Nintendo Life interview with Aonuma where he said he would consider giving Zelda a stronger role. Here’s specifically what was said in the interview:

NL: The Zelda series tells the story of a male hero rescuing a female princess. Would you ever consider giving Zelda her own game?

Aonuma: This is the second time I’ve received this question during this E3! I guess if people have strong feelings about it then it’s something to consider. I’ll keep that in mind! [laughs]

The Facebook page only requests that Zelda be given a stronger role, “And, if you see fit, make her a playable protagonist.” Under these requests I don’t see why Nintendo couldn’t at least give Zelda some bigger duties in future Zelda games, even if he wants to keep Link the main playable character. The current “damsel in distress” character Zelda plays is a bit overdone at this point.

People were ecstatic when Nintendo revealed that, in Super Mario 3D World, Princess Peach would be a playable character, so I don’t see why people wouldn’t have a similar reaction to Zelda being playable in The Legend of Zelda. But even if Nintendo decides it would be a good decision, it will still be years until that game came out, but we can at least wait for Aonuma’s ideas for near-future projects.

In Destructoid’s words, “Obviously, Nintendo will do what Nintendo will do, because Nintendo is Nintendo and that’s what it does. I would definitely be on board for a game actively starring the princess, though, and it’s very clear I’m far from the only one who would.”

If you want to support the project, head on over to the Facebook page.
