In life, we don’t all wind up where we thought we would. Some of us have led lives in directions different than what we expected and have wound up for the better. Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma, for example, started as somebody who knew next-to-nothing about video games and started in a career as a woodworker. And now, Aonuma helps lead one of the biggest franchises in video game history.

The folks over at Did You Know Gaming? recently produced a retrospective looking at the life and times of series producer Eiji Aonuma. They chronicle his life growing up before video games, how his then-girlfriend got him into playing video games, and even how the Karakuri puppets Aonuma built made a big impact on Shigeru Miyamoto.

There were quite a few moments from the video that stood out to me. The retrospective mentions that the then-recent release of A Link to the Past that changed Aonuma’s philosophy on video games. Also, I learned that Aonuma was the one who convinced Super Smash Bros. series director Masahiro Sakurai to come back to the series and help with development on Super Smash Bros. Brawl.
