Perhaps one of the most surprising Nintendo releases this year was Cadence of Hyrule, a Zelda spin-off title developed by Brace Yourself Games, the indie creators behind Crypt of the Necrodancer.

The game featured a return to Zelda‘s classic top-down camera and pixelated graphics. However, it came with a twist: rather than traditional Zelda movement and combat, the game focused on Crypt‘s rhythmic combat, wherein the player is only allowed to take actions on the beats of the current track. For some, this was a welcome challenge, and for others, it may have been too steep a challenge. For those who found difficulty with the rhythm-based combat, or simply did not favor it, a mode was offered where the player can move free of rhythm. Furthermore, while in this mode, enemies would only move when the player did.

In addition to returning to the classic Zelda style, the game threw in a number of enemies that had never before been seen outside of a 3D experience or 3rd person experience. Not just that, but it also featured randomized world maps, allowing for bounds of replayability.

For some, the question may have arisen: Will/should Cadence of Hyrule receive a DLC? Despite being full of content, the game contains a mere four dungeons when excluding the final, leaving for a relatively short experience. Not only would a DLC increase the amount of time spent immersed in the game, but it would also allow for new biomes, dungeons, bosses, and other challenges.

In addition to the above bonuses of a DLC, the game could introduce many new playable characters with varying styles to really amp up the replayability. The game currently has four playable characters in Link, Zelda, Cadence, and the all-original Deku Scrub, Yives. The main three play similarly, but Yives is a far step into a new direction. With only one heart of health, one method of attack via shooting Deku Seeds, and the unique ability to hide underground, the little Scrub allows for a very unique and challenging style. By incorporating other races found within the game and the greater Zelda series, the developers could innovate to new extremes, while also creating original fan favorites.

How do you feel about the idea of a DLC coming to Cadence of Hyrule? Do you think there is a chance the game could receive it down the road? If you’re for it, what would you like to see? Let us know in the comments below!
