Arguably the most significant addition to the newly-released Link’s Awakening remake is the Chamber Dungeon. An optional feature found in Dampe’s Shack, this mode tasks the player with re-arranging panels from previously completed dungeons. Those who were hoping for the Zelda equivalent to Super Mario Maker will likely be disappointed, as the Chamber Dungeon feels more like an extension of the ideas presented in Skyward Sword’s final temple, Sky Keep.

That said, this mode definitely creaks open the possibility of a Zelda Maker. Even series producer Eiji Aonuma said he would keep the idea in mind if the Chamber Dungeon proves to be successful. Now, as much as I love 2D Mario platformers, Mario Maker never truly clicked for me. A full-fledged Zelda Maker, on the other hand, that’s something that immediately grabs my attention.

Even as someone who was more interested in playing user-created levels than actually building my own, I felt as if Mario Maker was lacking at least one critical component: a sense of progression. Aspiring Mario Makers could build only individual levels, not entire world maps. This might sound a bit too ambitious, but how amazing would it be for Zelda Maker to allow us to effectively create our own Zelda games? To do more than just create a single dungeon at a time and — if we want — build our own, fully-fledged, 2D adventure? I’m probably thinking too far ahead — I should reserve those thoughts for my Zelda Maker 2 Daily Debates in 2023.
