There’s no question that Hyrule Warriors – the closest thing to a consistent spin-off series within the greater Zelda franchise – is geared toward a very specific niche. For as simple as its moment-to-moment combat can be, the sheer variety of playable characters keeps the experience from growing too stale for me. Indeed, since the original Wii U title’s release, Hyrule Warriors has become one of my go-to comfort games. At least a few times throughout any given year, I find myself jumping back into the Switch’s Definitive Edition for awhile and chipping away at its gargantuan Adventure Mode.

Given that this year marks the spin-off’s ten-year anniversary, I can’t help but think about its hypothetical future. While the original game’s generic version of Hyrule acted mostly as a springboard for never-thought-I’d-see-those-two-characters-on-screen-together team-ups, Age of Calamity applied similar sensibilities to a pre-existing world from the mainline series. Certainly, there has been a decent amount of debate regarding its authenticity as a Breath of the Wild prequel, but I see a ton of potential in that basic idea – using Hyrule Warriors as a medium through which producer Eiji Aonuma and friends might explore the various backstories of specific Zelda games.

For as much as I’d love to see a proper sequel to the 2014 original that fleshes out the roster of legacy characters even further – seriously, I know it’s been brought up a million times, but where the heck is Groose?! – I think the more exciting prospect would be a game centered on one of the aforementioned wars that, up until now, we’ve seen only through brief flashbacks. Of course, my No. 1 pick on that front is Twilight Princess’s Interloper War, followed by Skyward Sword’s ancient battle against Demise. Now, one of the greatest challenges of developing such a game would be creating a roster of mostly never-before-seen characters. Honestly, though, doesn’t that sound more exciting? We’ve already got a game in which you can play as Midna and Zant – let’s see their ancestors!

I’d love to hear from you all about this. If we’re ever to get another Hyrule Warriors title, what direction would you like to see the developers take? Let us know in the comments below!
