Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Pulse of the Ancients Spoilers below, read at your own risk!

When the first wave of DLC for Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity released my husband and I were more than excited to get started. Much to many players dismay, the DLC had a major element of work in order to unlock the newest weapons and perks. Personally I don’t mind having to grind it out in order to reap the rewards. I’m not a huge fan of just being handed new weapons or characters and there not being much required to get said weapon or character. I don’t mind having to work for rewards. The DLC was definitely made for those that are fairly far in the main champaign and there are some challenges that require you finish the main story before progressing. All of that being said, I really love the new DLC! So let’s jump right in and discuss Pulse of the Ancients.

One of my favorite things was the progression tree that the Ancient Lab used. It helped move the DLC along and was a great accompaniment to the challenges that appeared on the main map. The progression tree gave a sense of the unknown, but once you started filling it in it became obvious what you were working toward. Besides new weapons for Link, and Zelda, and the Battle-Tested Guardian, Pulse of the Ancients included a lot of quality of life stuff that the game desperately needed. In the progression tree you are able to update your runes to the “plus” option that Link is able to get in Breath of the Wild. You are also able to buy apples before the start of missions, and those apples are more effective at healing hearts. Improved quality of runes and healing items don’t necessarily make those more difficult challenges easier, but it helps. Another addition was being able to increase max weapon level and the quality of found weapons was increased too! With the release of the DLC we have been able to make some really amazing weapons that help with some of the more difficult challenges.

Speaking of difficulty, I loved the addition of Vicious Monsters! The Silver mobs being added to the game were fun addition, but they are HARD! My husband and I have maxed out our favorite characters to level 100 and have them some pretty gnarly weapons now, but even then it took many hits to knock out silver enemies. The vicious monster challenges rotate around the map so it’s nice that you are not playing the same mobs over and over again. It added yet another challenge to the game. Another additional challenge was being able to swap your game to Apocalyptic Mode. At the time of writing I have only tried the Battle of Hyrule Field (on a Blood Moon) in two player mode with two characters at level 100, and maxed out weapons. It was challenging, but not impossible. I’ll grant that it’s the very first mission of the game too – I can only imagine how much more of a challenge later missions will be when we truly start playing in that mode.

I greatly enjoyed Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity’s first wave of DLC! Pulse of the Ancients improved on a lot of things that the game needed also while giving us some rewards in the process. I am very excited for the next wave that will release late this year in November. What did you think of Pulse of the Ancients? Let us know in the comments below.
