Daily Debate: Were Any Bosses Better in Majora’s Mask 3D Than in the Original?

Majora’s Mask 3D just celebrated its seventh birthday. Do you feel old hearing that? I know I do.
Over the past seven years, it’s seemed like Majora’s Mask 3D has developed a bit of a reputation among Zelda fans as a good but flawed title, especially when compared to the revered Nintendo 64 original. Some of the most enduring criticisms of 3D relate to its boss battles, with the remake adding obvious visual weakpoints to the bosses themselves and, in some cases, adding completely new phases to fights.
There’s no question that the boss fights in Majora’s Mask 3D look and feel differently than they did in the original, but are any of those fights actually better?
While I personally agree that the remake’s changes made the Odolwa and Goht fights worse — the eyeball weakpoints needlessly interrupted the flow of already great fights — I do believe that the changes made the Gyorg and Twinmold fights more fun overall.
In both cases with those latter boss fights, Majora’s Mask 3D added extra phases that I believe introduced more variety to rather simple encounters. Forcing the player into the water during the Gyorg fight was a great way to keep that battle exciting, in my opinion, especially because I’ve become comfortable over the years sniping the big fish from the platform in the middle. And the tweaks made to the Twinmold fight — chiefly to the function of the Giant’s Mask — speak for themselves, honestly. I know I’d rather suplex that giant worm than slash at it with my sword any day of the week.
But what are your thoughts? Do you think any of the boss fights in Majora’s Mask were made better in the 3DS remake? Which changes were good or bad? Let us know in the comments below!
