The Legend of Zelda is, in my humble opinion, the best a high fantasy action-adventure video game franchise in the world.  Care to know why?  Well, it’s got the perfect combination of a timeless story told through innovative and captivating gameplay, for starters.  Hero saves princess (and the world while he’s at it) through the blood, sweat, and tears of battle.  Then there’s the mysterious exploration — from the unknown monsters that lurk in the depths of a dungeon to the wide, open world of Hyrule itself — all enticing and exciting!  We’ve also got our memorable and quirky characters (Midna, Groose, Ganondorf, and even Zelda herself), and an absolutely stunning score of music from the first game to the most recent to boot!  All of these elements come together to create an indescribable sense of wonder through the gaming outlet.

Some might say that games such as Final Fantasy, Fire Emblem, or similar titles could compete for the crown we’re discussing.  And while each of these franchises are indeed fantastic, I personally haven’t been sucked into their wonder in the same way that I have been with Zelda.  The only game that’s ever even come close is The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.  Perhaps I need immersion outside of turn-based gameplay to become properly absorbed in a high fantasy franchise.  Or perhaps the points I’ve made above speak for themselves.

Do you think the Legend of Zelda series is the best high fantasy video game franchise?  Let us know in the comments below!
