Videogame adaptations have come a long way since the horror that was 1993’s Super Mario Bros. After a bevy of trash over the years, I think we’ve finally found genuine success in Netflix’s Castlevania. It’s everything I could have ever wanted, and since then I’ve actually been thinking about how I might pitch a television series based on my favorite videogame franchise.

I’d propose an animated Zelda series in which each season tells a standalone story rather than a continual plot that spans the length of several seasons. They don’t necessarily have to be adaptations of existing stories, but I think it would be interesting to institute a different art style for each one. One season could be illustrated in the style of The Wind Waker with its cel-shaded aesthetic, and another could be drawn in the style of The Legend of Zelda TV series to capitalize on the original Zelda game. Finally, how’s about a Rankin Bass-inspired claymation season like the Link’s Awakening remake from last year? I think that this would be a great way to pay homage and reverence to the franchise as a whole.

While there would be a showrunner for the entirety of its run, I think it might be an interesting idea to have different teams come in for every season to provide artistic and creative input. This might be risky given that shows generally live and die by their creative teams, but Zelda as a franchise has such a fervent fanbase that I doubt there would be any shortage of talented individuals looking to put their own inspired stamp on things.

What do you think? Do you have any ideas as to how you’d pitch a Zelda-themed show? Let us know in the comments below!
