We’ve heard it all before, haven’t we? Nintendo is, if the video game rumor mill is to be believed, hard at work on a successor to its uber-popular Switch system. The insiders, the leakers, and the pundits have all said so, (as long as you take everything they say with a grain of salt, of course). Whether one labels this new console the “Switch Pro,” the “Switch 2,” or the “Super Switch,” we’ve been hearing this type of hearsay for years now.

But with the calendar’s turn toward 2024, speculation surrounding the imminent release of a new Nintendo console has really shifted into high gear. Based largely on the musings of analysts in the game and tech industries, news outlets like VGC, Yahoo, and CNBC are treating a 2024 “Switch 2” release as a “likely” proposition. News reports (since denied by Nintendo) claim that select developers have seen some type of new Nintendo hardware behind closed doors. And third-party hardware companies are, based on their best guesswork, already attempting to release new products to coincide with this rumored — and we mean “rumored” in the strongest sense of the word — system.

Historically, the lifespan of a Nintendo home console has been about five to six years. So, as we now move into the Switch’s seventh year on the market, we’re certainly due a new system if Nintendo intends to stay the course. Of course, half of the Switch’s lifespan has overlapped with a global pandemic and all the market disruptions brought with it. The past few years have been defined by uncertainty and instability in the tech space, so maybe historical trends don’t apply as much as they would otherwise.

So, with the entire video game sphere seemingly ready for a new Nintendo console this year, do you think we’re likely to get one? Do you expect Nintendo to release a Switch successor in 2024? Join the debate in the comments below!
