I have a handful of games that I remember playing with my brother when I was growing up — Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Kart Double Dash, Mario Party 5, and Soul Calibur II. You’ll probably notice Soul Calibur II sticks out as a noticeably more mature game in the lineup of kid-friendly adventure games, and that’s because as soon as I realized that Link was on the boxart for Soul Calibur II, I wanted to play as him. Did it matter that this game was technically Teen rated, and that I shouldn’t be playing it? Nope! I didn’t know anything about fighting games, and I definitely wasn’t good at them at that age, but if Link was in it? Sold!

It turns out that Soul Calibur II remains my favorite installment in the series, and I’ve gotten pretty good at playing as other characters besides Link (namely Xianghua and Talim) because the game is incredibly well-designed and balanced. It’s really held up, and for me, the Soul Calibur series has never has another guest character as iconic or memorable as Link. Not only that, but he was extremely fun to play as, sporting equipment and moves that are distinct to the Zelda series (his spin attack is super fun). I may have initially played Soul Calibur II simply because of Link, but it became a game that I have a lot of fun memories with, and for its time, it was a unique video game crossover that got fans excited. How about you? Did you play Soul Calibur II exclusively because Link was in it? Let us know in the comments!
