EijiWe are all here for the same reason: we love the Zelda series. I’m sure all of us have had debates regarding which game is the best or which boss is the most fun to battle, and we all have our own reason for liking each game. Whether it’s the puzzles, stories, combat or some other reason, there’s something about these games that keeps us playing them. In an interview with Nintendo News, a new online magazine by Nintendo, Eiji Aonuma shares what he think to be the most enjoyable element in a Zelda game.

Take the jump to see what it was.

During the interview Aunoma mentioned discovering new treasure is one of the series’ most enjoyable aspects. On the subject he said:

My son is in elementary school, and he asked, “What is so fun about Zelda anyway?” I tell him, “Finding treasure is the most fun!” Even if it is only one rupee inside the treasure chest, I think (laughs). Whenever you find a treasure chest, there is always a “Yes! I found it!”-sense of accomplishment, and when you open it, it is just so fun to hear. To discover a new item, I think I find pleasure in both the surprise and the opening.

I wholeheartedly agree that finding new treasure is one of the most enjoyable parts of the series. Every time I enter a dungeon I wonder what new item I will find hidden away, even if it ends up just being the boomerang. Exploration has always been a large part of the games and finding a treasure chest nestled away in dark cavern in the middle of no-where will always be fun.

However, there are always those chests that are just out of reach. You stare at it longingly wondering what it contains and spend ages wondering around trying to figure out how to get to it. You get the feeling of deep joy when the path appears before you, allowing you to finally discover what wonders have been kept from you this whole time. Not only do you open the chest to find 5 rupees but, most likely, your wallet is already full. Aonuma may tell his son that’s fun but, to me at least, it seems like the developers are taunting us.
