A Visit to Hyrule Market

Just when you think you’ve had your fill of Zelda events, there always seems to be one more gadget, one more deal, or one more dedication to the series. Next month, the video game festival GameCity is set to bring us one of the biggest Zelda events of the year: a full recreation of a Hyrule marketplace, complete with Zelda-related events and even stray dogs!

Eager to see just what is in store? Read on to find out.

Running from October 26th through the 29th, GameCity is taking Nottingham by storm this year. Featuring all sorts of game memorabilia and nerds galore, the gaming festival should be one to remember. However, there is one part of the event that will make Zelda fans quiver with excitement: Zelda Takeover Day.

On Saturday, October 29th – the last day of the festival – Nottingham’s Old Market Square will be transformed into the brimming hub that is Hyrule’s Market. The day will feature plenty of Zelda features that are sure to make the trip worth it, including:

  • Skyward Sword demos
  • The Lon-Lon Milk Bar (Bring a bottle!)
  • Ocarina lessons
  • An Ocarina Orchestra
  • Zelda Speed Runs
  • The ability to make your own sword and shield combination
  • Much more!

On top of that, those who perform with the Ocarina Orchestra after practicing will get to bring home an exclusive Legend of Zelda Ocarina of their very own! These are bound to become valuable collector’s items in the future, and besides who wouldn’t want a Zelda Ocarina to call their own?

Many activities like this one will also reward you with Triforce pieces, which will help you complete an event called the “Hero’s Quest,” though not much is known about the details of this quest yet.

In addition, fans are called to put together a “Fanzine” of sorts in the days leading up to the takeover. This fanzine will feature all sorts of artwork and literature created by Zelda fans themselves, and will be distributed to the public on the day of the event.

Finally, for the truly dedicated fans who attend, there will be a full canonical Speed Run of the entire Zelda main series. If you apply and are selected, you can join a tag team attempting to complete over a dozen Zelda games in a row beginning with The Legend of Zelda and going all the way up to Twilight Princess. Hey, so long as you aren’t the poor sap who gets stuck with The Adventure of Link or Wind Waker‘s Triforce Hunt, this shouldn’t be too tough… if you can handle 100 hours of gameplay.

Personally, I think this event looks like it could be truly incredible. If Nottingham weren’t so far away, I’d sacrifice my Halloween weekend in a heartbeat to make it to this. How about you guys? Who thinks they might make it to this event, or at least wish they could? Which of the activities are you excited about, and which ones just sound dumb? And how about those snazzy banners? Let us know!
