Tabletop RPG’s have seen a significant uptick in popularity in recent years. From variations on the traditional Dungeons & Dragons of old, to games that are created from the ground up, there’s something for every type of gamer out there. Some homebrew versions go so far as to recreate video game systems and storylines, and yes, many have created versions around the Zelda series.

One of these games was recently featured as part of Linktober’s Zelda Creator Con. Heroes of Hyrule, created by Jack Milton of CobblePath Games, is a TTRPG set 10-20 years before Ganon arises to begin a new cycle. Players can create characters as Hylian, Goron, Korok, Rito, Zora, Sheikah, and Gerudo, and each of these races has its own unique sets of skills that can be acquired during their quest. There are elements of cooking, music, and most certainly combat. The system is completely original and incorporates the aspects of the Triforce in an interesting way to add to the Zelda feel of the game.

Milton makes other TTRPGs as well, like the emotional horror game Locus, or the silly and light-hearted superhero-versus-aliens game Gemstone Warriors. The Heroes of Hyrule game is still under construction, but there are ways Milton’s looking to expand the game, from additional dimensions such as the Twilight Realm, Termina, or the Dark Realm, to other lands set in the same world like Labyranna and Holodrum. Eventually, things from the far past like Skyward Sword or Minish Cap could make their way into the game.

For now, Heroes of Hyrule is getting backing via Patreon. Backers can get access to a first-glance version of the game, similar to what was showcased at ZCC. Expansions to the base game will likely be funded this way as well; however once the base version is completed, it will be released for free.
