Not only will Super Smash Bros. for Wii U have more and bigger stages, but there will even be a brand new type of stage created for this particular entry: foreground-background stages. As the name suggests, these stages have two levels to them – one in the front and one towards the “back” – and fighters can battle in either or both of these areas. The first (and perhaps the only) stage shown to demonstrate this capability is the Jungle Hijinks stage (featured at 4:10 in the above video) from the Donkey Kong series, in which players can blast between the front of back battlegrounds using barrels, much like those that appear in Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong: Tropical Freeze.

Given the feel of a multidimensional battles, it seems a shame that Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS seems to have missed out on these features. Then again, perhaps we’ll see them appear once the “New” 3DS arrives with its enhanced 3DS capabilities. This type of stage seems like a great step in the right direction to keep smash feeling fresh and creative – alongside the expanded stage builder – and will add to the list of stages suited to the 5-8 player smash modes. Will you be giving this type of stage some battle time?
