Although Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker may seem irrelevant to The Legend of Zelda, Toad may owe it to Link for being the star of his first ever spin-off. In a recent interview with Treasure Tracker director Shinya Hiratake, he had revealed that the game originally had nothing to do with Toad, when in fact, it was actually a game designed to be part of the Legend of Zelda franchise. According to Game Informer, the idea behind the potential Zelda game came from game director Shinya Hiratake. He had originally wanted to create a diorama-like game that featured Link. In fact, he presented the demo to several higher ups, including the creator of the Zelda franchise himself, Shigeru Miyamoto. Here’s what Hiratake had to say:

“We must have done too good of a job with our demo, because during our presentation, Mr. Miyamoto asked us how we were planning on bringing these dioramas into production. He thought we were pitching him an actual physical product design.

We like to think that Mr. Miyamoto finally realized the vision we had for a diorama those many years ago.”

Unfortunately, the idea was shot-down, and thus transformed into Treasure Trackers. Interestingly enough, the overshadowing concept had had been influenced by the special bonus levels from Super Mario 3D World. Miyamoto however, seemed impressed enough to consider the original concept for an entirely new Zelda Game.
