Kaepora Gaebora’s Theme Soars in New Directions with this EWI Cover
Posted on November 01 2017 by Rod Lloyd
We’ve highlighted a lot of fan arrangements of classic Zelda tunes over the years, covering a wide array of musical genres. But every so often, we are confronted with a sound that we’ve never quite heard before, as a Zelda song is brought to life by a wholly unique instrument. Soundole VGM Covers on YouTube recently expanded our musical horizons by uploading a cover of Kaepora Gaebora’s Theme from Ocarina of Time, played on the strange and enchanting electric wind instrument.
The electric wind instrument (abbreviated as EWI) is an electronic musical instrument that functions very much like standard woodwind instruments like the saxophone, clarinet, or flute, but produces a more digital, synthesized sound. This excellent Kaepora Gaebora cover served as my introduction to the instrument, adding something completely fresh to the familiar tune. The EWI gives the owl’s theme a more distinguished, regal sound, as it could easily serve as a castle theme in a future Zelda title.
Normally I get frustrated when Kaepora Gaebora repeats himself, but I wouldn’t mind listening to this cover over and over again. You can hear more from Soundole VGM Covers on YouTube right here.
What do you think of this interesting cover? Have you heard of the EWI before? Would you want to hear more EWI Zelda covers in the future? Let us know in the comments below!
