Since Tears of the Kingdom’s initial unveiling in 2019, there’s been plenty of discussion surrounding its decision to revisit the same Hyrule as its predecessor. Even I have expressed some reservations toward this approach. That said, the more I see of the game in action, the less concerned I am about how fresh the adventure will ultimately feel.

Indeed, there are many potential advantages to re-using the same world map, not the least of which being the opportunity to expand or subvert familiar locales. Depending on how drastic these changes are, even the most well-trodden environments can feel brand new again. And based on what we’ve seen from the latest Tears of the Kingdom trailer, that definitely seems to be among the Zelda team’s goals.

From the massive storm cloud in the Hebra region to what might be Super Mario Sunshine levels of pollution in Lanayru, the issues plaguing Hyrule seem much more tangible this time around. In Breath of the Wild, the corrupted Divine Beasts — despite what certain characters may have told me — felt more like annoying inconveniences than immediate, world-ending threats. It’s one thing to be told that Vah Rudania has stifled the Gorons’ mining operations. Meanwhile, in Tears of the Kingdom, the danger is clear: malice is erupting from Death Mountain!

Of course, we’ll have wait for the game itself to determine how impactful these striking environmental shakeups ultimately are, but these are wonderful signs. I’m so excited to revisit these regions under more perilous circumstances. Each of the three aforementioned locations look deliciously dangerous, but I’m most excited to see what changes have been made to Gerudo Desert. Do those pockets of quicksand lead anywhere? And what’s up with that large structure rising from the sand? Man, I would love to see this world’s interpretation of either The Arbiter’s Grounds or Spirit Temple.

What about you, though? Which location from Breath of the Wild are you most excited to revisit? Let us know in the comments below!
