Classic Dungeon Crawler Meets Puzzles & Exploration In This Zelda-Like Game Coming Soon to Switch

It’s fair to say that we’re all feeling that itch for something Zelda-like to hold us over until “that game which shall remain unmentioned in this article” comes out. Tunic recently released to much fanfare, but it’s not the only inspired-by-Zelda game on our radar. Coming on May 12th to the Nintendo Switch online store, Dungeons of Dreadrock is a dungeon-crawler that has already seen success on iOS, Android, and PC.
This grid-based dungeon-crawler sporting a protagonist clad in a green hood takes after classic titles such as Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder. Working through 100 unique levels en route to the Dead King of the Mountain, your quest revolves around saving your brother who was chosen as this year’s challenger to the aforementioned King. Each of the grid-based levels are simple enough for the pick-up-and-play style that is so heavily featured with the Switch.
What stands out to me with this title, aside from the incredible pixel art style, is the focus on grid-based exploration and combat. This plays well into the puzzles on many of the levels as well as offers a way to make the combat feel different. Sometimes the puzzle-solving aspect plays into the combat as well, building off both parts of the mechanic. The story itself seems engaging enough to drive your exploration of this mountain dungeon as well.
Dungeons of Dreadrock is currently available on PC, iOS, and Android, but will become available for the Nintendo Switch on May 12th. The game will retail for $10 USD, but there will be a 50% discount at release.
What do you think about this title? Does Dungeons of Dreadrock inspire some Zelda-like vibes for you? Think you’ll be scooping it up for the Switch, or have you already played it on one of the other platforms? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below or chat about it over in our Discord!
